Many reactions may cause fire or explosion. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire. NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking. NO contact with strong oxidants. NO contact with hot surfaces. Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water in large amounts, carbon dioxide. EXPLOSION Vapour/air mixtures are explosive. Risk of fire and explosion on contact with oxidants and metal oxides. Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting. In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position. EXPOSURE AVOID ALL CONTACT! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR! INHALATION Blue lips or finger nails. Blue skin. Burning sensation. Convulsions. Cough. Dizziness. Headache. Laboured breathing. Nausea. Vomiting. Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection. Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention. SKIN MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness. Pain. Blisters (further see Inhalation). Protective gloves. Protective clothing. First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer for medical attention. EYES Redness. Pain. Severe deep burns. Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor. INGESTION Abdominal cramps. Burning sensation. Weakness (further see Inhalation). Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention. SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Collect leaking liquid in sealable containers. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment (extra personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus). Fireproof. PHYSICAL DANGERS: The vapour mixes well with air, explosive mixtures are easily formed. CHEMICAL DANGERS: May explode on heating or in contact with metal oxides. The substance may spontaneously ignite on contact with air and porous materials such as earth, asbestos, wood or cloth. The substance decomposes on heating or on burning producing toxic and irritating fumes including nitrogen oxides. The substance is a strong reducing agent and reacts violently with oxidants with fire hazards. The substance is a medium strong base which reacts violently with strong acids. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs): TLV (as Ceiling limit): 0.2 ppm; 0.38 mg/m3 A2 (skin) (ACGIH 1994-1995). ROUTES OF EXPOSURE: The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour, through the skin and by ingestion. INHALATION RISK: A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20░C. EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE: Corrosive. The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation of this substance may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system, liver and blood , resulting in convulsions and formation of methaemoglobin. Exposure at high concentrations may result in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated. EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE: The substance may have effects on the liver and blood , resulting in formation of methaemoglobin. This substance is possibly carcinogenic to humans. N O T E S The occupational exposure limit value should not be exceeded during any part of the working exposure. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate spray, by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. Rinse contaminated clothes (fire hazard) with plenty of water.
